Our Evaluation Methodology
The ‘Bali Agrotourism’ seal of approval is not granted lightly. Every partner, from a family-run coffee farm in Kintamani to a luxury boutique resort in Sidemen, undergoes a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process. Our methodology is designed to ensure that every experience we recommend meets our uncompromising standards of authenticity, sustainability, luxury, and safety. This transparency is key to the trust our clients place in us.
The Four Pillars of Our Evaluation
We assess every potential partner and experience using a proprietary scoring system based on four core pillars. A minimum score must be achieved in each category for a partner to be considered for inclusion in our curated collection of experiences.
1. Authenticity & Cultural Integrity (40% Weighting)
- Community Connection: Is the experience genuinely rooted in the local community, or is it a performance for tourists? We prioritize partners with deep, multi-generational ties to their land and traditions.
- Adherence to Tri Hita Karana: Does the operation reflect the core Balinese philosophy of harmony with God, people, and nature?
- Educational Value: Does the experience provide deep, meaningful insights into Balinese agriculture, culture, and spirituality?
- Exclusivity & Access: Does the partner offer access that is not available to the general public, such as private ceremonies or one-on-one time with master artisans?
2. Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship (30% Weighting)
- Resource Management: We assess water conservation practices (especially in relation to the Subak), waste management systems (with a focus on eliminating single-use plastics), and energy efficiency.
- Organic & Regenerative Practices: We verify claims of organic farming, looking for certifications or clear evidence of regenerative agricultural techniques.
- Biodiversity & Conservation: Does the partner actively contribute to protecting local ecosystems and biodiversity? We look for partnerships with organizations like The Nature Conservancy or local conservation initiatives.
- Community Benefit: What percentage of staff is hired from the local village? How does the business contribute to the local economy beyond wages? See our Sustainability commitments for more detail.
3. Luxury, Comfort & Service (20% Weighting)
- Quality of Service: We evaluate the professionalism, attentiveness, and warmth of the staff. Training and guest-to-staff ratios are key metrics.
- Accommodations & Amenities: For lodging partners, we assess the quality of the facilities, design, cleanliness, and attention to detail.
- Cuisine: We look for high-quality culinary offerings that emphasize locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
- Seamless Logistics: From airport transfers to daily activities, we demand flawless execution and proactive problem-solving.
4. Safety & Compliance (10% Weighting)
- Regulatory Adherence: We verify all necessary licenses and permits, including the SIUP Pariwisata (Tourism Business License).
- Safety Protocols: We conduct a thorough review of emergency procedures, staff training (including first aid), and equipment maintenance.
- Hygiene Standards: We ensure adherence to the highest standards of cleanliness, including CHSE (Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environment Sustainability) protocols.
Our Vetting Process
1. Initial Screening: Our partnerships team identifies potential partners based on reputation, referrals, and initial research.
2. Anonymous Site Visit: A member of our senior team conducts an unannounced, anonymous visit to experience the service from a guest’s perspective.
3. Formal On-Site Audit: If the initial visit is successful, our sustainability and operations experts conduct a formal, in-depth audit, interviewing management, staff, and community members.
4. Annual Review: Every partner in our network is re-evaluated annually to ensure our high standards are consistently maintained. We are not afraid to delist partners who no longer meet our criteria.

Imagine the vibrant scent of ripening cacao pods mingling with the earthy aroma of volcanic soil, or the gentle murmur of water flowing through ancient rice terraces. These are the sensory hallmarks of Bali’s agrotourism, and our rigorous evaluation ensures every recommended experience offers not just a glimpse, but a genuine immersion into the island’s agricultural heart.
Authenticity and cultural integrity: preserving Bali’s soul
…generational knowledge passed down through families, ensuring that the traditions and wisdom embedded in Bali’s agricultural practices are respected and shared responsibly. We look for partners who actively preserve and showcase indigenous farming techniques, such as the ancient subak irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. This intricate network of rice paddies, water temples, and canals reflects a philosophical principle of Tri Hita Karana – harmony between humans, nature, and the spiritual realm – and is a testament to Bali’s profound connection to its land. Our evaluation goes beyond surface-level presentations, delving into whether the experience genuinely contributes to the perpetuation of these invaluable cultural practices.
We scrutinize the narrative presented to guests, prioritizing those experiences that tell an honest story of the land and its people, rather than a romanticized or commercialized version. This includes assessing the transparency of supply chains, ensuring fair compensation for local farmers and artisans, and verifying that profits genuinely circulate within the community. For us, authenticity also means providing opportunities for meaningful, respectful interaction, allowing travelers to learn directly from those who work the land, participate in daily rituals, or understand the intricate process of Balinese coffee production, from bean to cup. It is this depth of cultural immersion, weighted at 40% of our total score, that truly sets a Condé Nast Traveler-approved agrotourism experience apart.
Sustainability and environmental stewardship: cultivating a greener future
The delicate balance of Bali’s ecosystem demands unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. Our second pillar, weighted at 30%, rigorously assesses each partner’s dedication to sustainability and ecological preservation. We look for evidence of organic farming practices, minimizing the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and promoting biodiversity through companion planting and habitat conservation. Partners must demonstrate robust waste management systems, from composting organic materials to comprehensive recycling programs, aiming for significant waste reduction—many of our top-tier partners achieve over 70% diversion from landfill. Water conservation is another critical factor, with preferences given to those employing rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation techniques, and greywater recycling.
Beyond the immediate farm, we evaluate how partners integrate with and protect the surrounding natural environment, whether it’s preserving a local forest patch, maintaining the health of a river, or educating guests on local flora and fauna. This includes sourcing local and seasonal ingredients not only for culinary experiences but also for construction materials and guest amenities, thereby reducing carbon footprints and supporting local economies. Our team conducts on-site audits to verify these claims, observing practices firsthand and reviewing certifications from reputable environmental organizations. An agrotourism experience is truly exceptional when it not only offers a beautiful setting but actively contributes to the long-term health and vitality of Bali’s natural heritage.
Luxury, safety, and the discerning traveler’s experience
While authenticity and sustainability form the bedrock, a Condé Nast Traveler recommended experience must also deliver on the promise of luxury and uncompromising safety. Our third pillar, Luxury & Experiential Excellence, carries a 20% weighting, focusing on refined comfort, impeccable service, and unique, personalized touches. This encompasses everything from the design and aesthetics of accommodations, which should blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, to the quality of gourmet farm-to-table dining, often featuring ingredients harvested just steps away. We assess the attention to detail in guest services, the exclusivity of experiences offered, such as private cooking classes or bespoke village tours, and the overall ambiance that elevates a simple farm visit into an unforgettable journey.
Finally, with a 10% weighting, Safety & Operational Standards are non-negotiable. Every partner undergoes a thorough review of their health and hygiene protocols, emergency preparedness, and staff training. This includes adherence to international safety guidelines, regular maintenance of facilities and equipment, and transparent communication regarding any potential risks or necessary precautions. We look for robust insurance policies, certified first-aid personnel on site, and clear evacuation plans. Many of our partners have achieved the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s CHSE (Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability) certification, underscoring their commitment to providing a secure and worry-free environment for every guest. This holistic approach ensures that your journey into Bali’s agricultural heart is not only enriching and sustainable but also supremely comfortable and safe.
